Student Organizations
USC Viterbi’s student organizations engage in community service, and there are also K-12 STEM outreach opportunities through the USC Viterbi K-12 STEM Center, the Center for Engineering Diversity and USC WiSE. Student organizations can “adopt” similar student groups at local high schools, where the demand for STEM mentors is great. Organizations that participate in outreach can work with K-12 Center staff to connect with others in the community and also spread the news about this outreach.
Service Learning
Service learning combines formal instruction with service in the community. Graduate and undergraduate students at Viterbi can participate in diverse service learning activities.
- Course-Related Service Learning Projects: Create instructional materials that can be used by teachers interested in infusing engineering research in their K-12 curriculum, or partner with developing communities to improve their quality of life through the implementation of environmentally sustainable, equitable, and economical engineering projects.
Institute for Broadening Participation
Institute for Broadening Participation conducts year-round outreach to students, faculty and administrators in underserved communities and underrepresented groups, publicizing posted opportunities, including K-12 opportunities, research experiences for undergraduates, funded undergraduate and graduate programs, internships, scholarships and fellowships, and opportunities for mentoring and professional development, post-doctoral placements, and early career faculty – all searchable by discipline, keyword, institution or area.
