Week 3: Robotic Assistance

Engineering Fields Applied

Mechanical Engineering
the type of engineering that involves the design, construction, and use of machines.
This was used for the building of the two robots.
Computer Engineering
the type of engineering that involves buiding hardware as well as creating the programs behind electronics.
This was used for the programing of the robots. Another example of computer engineering is http://gniotgroup.edu.in/computer_&_science.php
Electrical Engineering
the type of engineering that involve working with electricity, designing and applying circuitry, etc.
This was used used for wiring the VEX Robot. Another example of electrical engineering is http://www.china2west.com/product-development/

Objective

In three days we had to create two robots and program five robots. Each robot was unique in the way they looked and in their job. All the robots worked together because they all were a part of helping rescuing people in collapsed building.

1. VEX Robot for Debris Removal
Its job is to remove debris from the entrance of the building. It must have...
  • Sensors to locate debris
  • A hand with movable fingers and thumbs
  • A forearm to lift/lower the hand
  • A upper arm to move to hand forward/back
  • A mechanism to allow for a yaw rotation

2. Arduino Redbot
Its job is to follow a path, and while following the path it must stop frequently and sound an alarm in order for survivors to follow it out of the building. It must...
  • Follow a black line
  • Be able to move around a stationary object
  • Sound an alarm
  • Make left and right turns

 3. iRobot
Its job is to search the room for survivors who will then push a button for it to return home. It will also carry the scribbler and allow if to follow it home. It must have...
  • The ability to efficiently search the room
  • Have a button for the survivor to press
  • Return home slowly enough for the scribbler to follow

 4. Scribbler
Its job is to follow behind the iRobot, drawing a path from the survivor(s) to the command center. It hust have...
  • The ability to follow behind the iRobot
  • Draw a path back from the survivor to the command center

 5. VEX IQ
Its job is to follow the path left by the scribbler and deliver releif supplies (a water bottle) to the survivors. It must have...
  • A mechanism to hold a water bottle
  • The mechanism must be able to release the water bottle
  • The ability to follow the path left by the scribbler
