BS3 STEAM at USC

USC has partnered with Black College Success (BCS), a program of the LA Promise Fund, to increase student awareness of career pathways in the STEAM fields.  The BCS team identified STEAM readiness as a gap within our continuum of supports and designed the Black Student STEAM Success Program (Black S³) to help give the students they serve a stronger STEAM foundation.  USC Viterbi K-12 STEM Center’s expertise in science, math, and engineering is responsible for providing the curriculum.

Black S³ Spring STEAM Program meets in-person and allows students to explore STEAM careers and academic pathways through hands-on labs/demonstrations.  Additional virtual sessions, designed and facilitated by the faculty and graduate students of the K-12 STEM Center, provide participants with science and math enrichment and professional development to support college and career readiness.
Black S³’s Summer STEAM Bridge Program reinforces concepts in STEAM disciplines to enhance student success and aid with college transition. Students receive instruction and support in math and science pre-reqs, paired with project-based activities and STEAM career pathways opportunities. It is a two-week long residential on campus experience that allows students to get a taste of university life in preparation for their future ahead.

Testimonials

"The most memorable moment was getting to have the college resources fair. As Black students we aren’t really given the access to things like that, so the exposure was greatly appreciated on my behalf."

“The most memorable moment was the STE(A)M expo because I learned a lot of new ways to earn internships and was exposed to scholarship opportunities that I was unaware of.”

“Going to Disneyland and building a car for science was pretty memorable and it was unique experiences as a Black student.”
