(Note: You will be offered an antigen testing appointment for DAY 6 of your isolation period. This is to evaluate whether you may end isolation earlier than the full 10-day isolation period. You can also take any COVID test -- you can get it cleared by a USC Health center staff)All testing sites are closed on Sundays and USC Observed Holidays. FAQ
On June 13, SHINE students and their families are invited to the morning’s orientation and lunch. During lunch on June 13, the SHINE students and families will first meet the SHINE Mentors and get a tour of where the research takes place. From 1 - 4 pm that afternoon, all the SHINE students will stay on campus to take the USC General Lab Safety class; family members will be on their own that afternoon if they want to wait for their child to finish the class - we have an open campus and much to do and see. All SHINE Students must receive the certificate upon completing that June 13 training before they can work with their Mentors, so June 15 is the first day SHINE students will work with the research team. To RSVP for the June 13 Welcome Day, please use this link to indicate how many people will be attending and to inform us of any dietary requirements or accommodation requests.
We encourage all the SHINE students and their mentors to work toward a similar schedule of Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 9 am - 4 pm, giving SHINE students a lunch break from noon - 1 pm. Each student’s final schedule might vary to reflect commuting times and any recurring time conflicts; when the family and Mentor all agree to the individual’s schedule, it will be submitted by June 17. Students will report to their Mentors’ locations Monday and Wednesday mornings and work under their Mentors’ direction on those days. We encourage the students to meet together for lunch and use that time to get to know a wide variety of people. SHINE does not provide food on those days, but each research team has access to a refrigerator and microwave for lunches brought from home; alternatively, food can be purchased on the USC campus at any of these food venues. On Friday mornings, all the students will meet with me and the SHINE Team from 9 am - 1 pm at specified locations to learn about the nature and significance of the research, hear guest speakers, etc. We serve lunches on Fridays to the SHINE students. Friday afternoons, from 1 - 4 pm, they report back to their SHINE Mentors in their research locations.

USC’s policies are located here. USC’s Chief Health Officer, Dr. Van Orman, highly recommends that all SHINE students, as well as all USC students and employees, be vaccinated and boosted; however, being vaccinated is not required. All unvaccinated SHINE students and USC students/staff must be tested weekly in order to come to campus. Next week, we will send out a request for medical details in case of a medical emergency on campus.
Our goal is to have all SHINE students complete their seven weeks of research while being realistic that COVID remains a threat to our health and well being. In case a SHINE student is exposed to COVID and must quarantine or catches COVID and must recuperate and quarantine, we will work to find a solution that will allow the participant to continue the program remotely to protect the health and well being of all the people in the research group. However, once the SHINE Mentors are hired throughout the four biweekly pay periods of SHINE, they count on these funds for their summer livelihood, therefore refunds for any SHINE students unable to finish the program will be restricted to the cost of lunches provided, not mentor or administrative costs. If a SHINE Mentor becomes exposed and must quarantine or becomes ill and cannot participate, the SHINE program will work to find a viable solution, including providing remote work, finding a qualified substitute SHINE Mentor, etc.
